abstract = "In the Brazilian Amazon, deforestation has led to a rapid
transformation of forest areas into other land use and land cover
types. In Roraima, the understanding of transformation dynamics is
the study object of GeoMucaja{\'{\i}} Project, focusing on the
municipality of Mucaja{\'{\i}}, whose rates of deforestation and
environmental degradation are the highest in the State, according
to PRODES (Monitoring of the Brazilian Amazon Forest By Satellite)
and DEGRAD (Mapping of Forest Degradation in the Brazilian
Amazon). The present work aims to analyze deforestation in
Mucaja{\'{\i}} - Roraima, from 2000 to 2015, according to the
size of the polygons detected by PRODES. The deforestation
polygons were grouped by size into six categories: over 100 ha, 50
to 100 ha, 25 to 50 ha, 10 to 25 ha, 5 to 10 ha and below 5 ha.
For each year, the percentage of clouds and the dates of the
images were analyzed, in order to better understand annual
variation characteristics of the data. The results pointed to an
intense variation of the data throughout the historical series,
reaching the maximum in 2008, both in the number of openings
(2096) and in the area involved (21,680 ha). Throughout the
historical series there was variation in relation to the sizes of
the opening polygons detected by PRODES. It was observed that
openings with larger areas (above 50 ha) represented more than 50%
of total deforestation in the first years of the series (up to
2003), while smaller openings (below 25 ha) accounted for 75 to
80% of openings in the last years (2009 to 2015). Another
interesting feature of the series analyzed is the increase in the
percentage of cloud coverage present in the images used, reaching
a maximum of 52% in 2010, indicating a need for a change in the
choice of images for the State of Roraima.",
